GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala progressive presidential candidate Bernardo Arévalo took a commanding lead in preliminary results over former first lady Sandra Torres in an election where frustrated voters demanded change from corrupt politics. With about 70% of ballots counted, Arévalo led with 59% to Torres 36% of the vote. The two candidates offered starkly different paths forward. Former first lady Sandra Torres became an ally of outgoing, deeply unpopular President Alejandro Giammattei in her third bid for the presidency. Her opponent, Bernardo Arévalo, with the progressive Seed Movement, rode a wave of popular resentment toward politics to his surprise spot in the runoff. But moves to drag the electoral process into the courts after the first round of voting in June led many Guatemalans to wonder what was to come between Sunday’s results and the transfer of power Jan. 14.Central America’s most populous country and the region’s largest economy continues to struggle with wide...

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (AP) — Viktor Hovland delivered the best round of his career at the right time, making birdie on all but two holes on the back nine Sunday for a 9-under 61 to break the course record at Olympia Fields and storm past Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick to win the BMW Championship. What looked to be a two-man race between Scheffler and Fitzpatrick turned into a one-man show by Hovland. He headed to the back nine four shots behind. In the end, Scheffler and Fitzpatrick had to hole out from the fairway to catch him. Both closed with a 66, a score that normally would be enough to win on a day like this. They had to settle for runner-up to Hovland, who won for the second time this year and never looked better doing it.Jordan Spieth bogeyed his last two holes for a 71 and still narrowly made it among the top 30 from the FedEx Cup who advance to the Tour Championship next week. Fitzpatrick was the only one to play himself in, going from No. 40 to No. 10 with his runner...

The war against ‘woke capitalism’ is coming to the EU

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:14:29 GMT

The man who brought you Brexit is back with a playbook for Europe’s populists.Nigel Farage’s rabble-rousing cry against “woke capitalism” is a roadmap for Euroskeptic parties across the continent seeking to rally their base against an establishment they portray as unconcerned with real people’s worries. With Europeans heading to the polls next year, Farage’s spat with a bank that dropped him over his political views has already caught the attention of politicians in the EU. The next step would be for them to try to convince voters that an out-of-touch elite is too preoccupied with climate change and diversity to focus on their concerns.“Far-right parties will keep talking about immigration because it’s their core topic, but in order to increase their appeal they need to kind of diversify their issues, what they talk about, and this is where woke capitalism comes in,” said Sofia Vasilopoulou, professor of European politics at King’s College London.T...
