CU Buffs vs. Nebraska: Live updates and highlights from Folsom Field in Boulder

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:53 GMT

Game predictionsMatt Schubert, sports editor: This place is ready to explode. Will the Buffs deliver in Coach Prime’s debut? That probably boils down to this: stopping Nebraska’s run game. Given what happened last week against TCU, that’s not a given. But … Colorado 27, Nebraska 21.Kyle Newman, sports reporter:  It comes down to the wire and the Huskers physicality is all the Buffs can handle. But ultimately, the Colorado defense shows some backbone in the second half and Shedeur Sanders’ late TD pass to Xavier Weaver is the difference. CU 28, Nebraska 27.Pre-game updatesMatt Schubert is “guaranteeing” that the Folsom Frenzies will storm the field if CU wins today, by blowout or by last-second dramatics. I would probably also put money down on that prop. — Kyle NewmanThe student section is roughly 75% full … and they are IN A LATHER more than an hour before kickoff. What’s causing California’s ocean waves to glow?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:53 GMT

Earlier this week, a photographer and videographer captured boogie boarders surfing some bioluminescent waves in Huntington Beach. The glow from the waves is a result of algae that is disturbed at night and causes bioluminescence. Nate Jaros, senior director of fish and invertebrates at the Aquarium of the Pacific told KTLA that the microalgae, called a dinoflagellate, is associated with a red tide and gives the water a red-colored tint during the day while creating a bioluminescent glow when disturbed at night. “It's the same type of organism when you have a red tide, which gives the water kind of an orangish brown, red kind of tint when they are in high density during the day,” he said. “But at night when disturbed, they produce bioluminescence. So when there's a lot of agitation in the surf, it can activate that bioluminescence which makes the waves appear to be glowing.”The microalgae always exists in the water, but during the summer when the water is warmer and contains mo...

Kurtenbach: The 49ers are held to higher standards than other NFL teams. This year’s team could meet them

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:53 GMT

There is only one acceptable outcome for the San Francisco 49ers this season: a championship. No more long-term plans. No more “wait until next year.” No more considering coming close a success. No more blaming injuries or bad luck for coming up short. It’s been 29 years since the 49ers last won the Super Bowl. That streak cannot reach 30.And while the Super Bowl LVIII is five months away, Sunday’s 2023 season opener in Pittsburgh against the Steelers (10 a.m., KTVU-TV) will let everyone know if these 49ers understand the assignment.Strangely, this all-or-nothing pressure — a force that could fortify or break this squad throughout the season — is refreshing. An uncompromising standard was once implicit for this organization, a bedrock of American professional sports.I’m glad it’s back.Related ArticlesSan Francisco 49ers | Kurtenbach: The 49ers finally paid Nick Bosa because you can’t put a price on a Super Bowl San Francisco 49e...

Why do we work 9 to 5? The history of the eight-hour workday

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:53 GMT

New York (CNN) — US work culture revolves around employees putting in eight hours a day, five days a week — a schedule immortalized by Dolly Parton in her 1980 song “9 to 5.”It’s just the norm, many assume. Same as it ever was.Except, it wasn’t always so. It has just held steady at that level since World War II.How the United States landed on the eight-hour standard wasn’t the result of one union or one industry, one company or one law. Rather it came about after a long and complex mix of labor actions, advocacy, political compromises, pioneering employers and economic competition. Here is a (highly) abbreviated rundown of how US society settled (so far anyway) on an eight-hour workday. The length of the workday over the yearsGenerally speaking, there was a steady decline in the length of the workday from the 1800s through World War II, with a fairly steep drop during the 1920s, said economic historian Benjamin Hunnicutt, a professor at the University of Iowa. But the descent began fro...
