Walters: Newsom’s expansive health care promises remain elusive

Five years ago, while running for governor, Gavin Newsom pledged to transform California’s medical care to a single-payer system similar to those in Canada and western Europe.Newsom backed single-payer legislation, which had passed the state Senate, saying there was “no reason to wait around.”“I’m tired of politicians saying they support single-payer but that it’s too soon, too expensive or someone else’s problem,” Newsom said. His position helped solidify support for Newsom among the proposal’s progressive advocates as he dueled with a fellow Democrat, Antonio Villaraigosa. The bill stalled in the Assembly, and after winning the election, Newsom began edging away from the single-payer concept, citing difficult barriers. One is persuading the federal government to give California the $200-plus billion it spends on Californians’ health care – about half the state’s total medical expenditures.Newsom segued into pursuing universal health care, meaning all of the nearly 40 mil...Mueren 4 niños tras quedar atrapados en la marea mientras pescaban en Quebec, según la policía

SINGAPORE — Ukraine seeks to become a NATO member within a “very short” time after achieving military victory over Russia, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister told POLITICO on Sunday, doubling down on Kyiv’s pressure on the West for a clear roadmap to joining the military alliance. In an interview on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Volodymyr Havrylov also called on Beijing to refrain from sending military supplies to Moscow, while saying that it’s “understandable” for normal trading activities to continue between China and Russia.Ukraine’s future role in NATO has become a heated topic in the lead-up to a July summit of the alliance’s leaders in Lithuania. The U.S. and Germany have been pushing back against calls from Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states for a clear plan on Kyiv’s membership bid.On Saturday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there is “no point” for him to attend the NATO summi...More than 5,000 new species discovered at future deep-sea mining site in Pacific Ocean

Toronto (CTV Network) — More than 5,000 new species have been discovered at an expansive future deep-sea mining site in the Pacific Ocean.Known as the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), the mineral-rich site stretches six million square kilometers from Mexico to Hawaii. About twice the size of India, the CCZ has already been carved up into mining claims for future exploitation, with companies eager to harvest abundant deposits of key battery materials like manganese and cobalt that are located 4,000 to 6,000 metres below the surface. To better understand what could be at risk once mining begins, a team of biologists led by London’s Natural History Museum sought to survey the region’s biodiversity. Of the 5,578 species they identified, approximately 90 per cent were entirely new to science.“We share this planet with all this amazing biodiversity, and we have a responsibility to understand it and protect it,” lead author and Natural History Museum deep-sea eco...Biden signs debt ceiling deal into law, averting historic default

(CNN) — President Joe Biden signed into law Saturday a bill to suspend the nation’s debt limit through January 1, 2025, to avert a first-ever US default.“I just signed into law a bipartisan budget agreement that prevents a first-ever default while reducing the deficit, safeguarding Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and fulfilling our scared obligation to our veterans,” Biden said in a tweet, which was accompanied by a short video of him signing the bill.“Now, we continue the work of building the strongest economy in the world,” the president added.Suspending the debt limit through early 2025 takes the threat of default off the table until after next year’s presidential election. In addition to addressing the debt limit, the law caps nondefense spending, expands work requirements for some food stamp recipients and claws back some Covid-19 relief funds, among other policy provisions. The bipartisan deal to address the debt limit was struck between t...Car crashes into utility pole in Oakham

NEW YORK (AP) — In his first week on the campaign trail as a presidential candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly hit his chief rival, Donald Trump, from the right.“This is a different guy than 2015, 2016,” DeSantis told a conservative radio host before slamming the bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation Trump championed as “basically a jailbreak bill” that allowed dangerous people out of prison. He also accused Trump of “turning the reins over” to Dr. Anthony Fauci during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Trump had “ endorsed and tried to ram” an “amnesty” bill through Congress and vowed that — unlike the former president — he would finish building the U.S.-Mexico border wall.In Iowa on Saturday, he hit back at Trump for saying he didn’t like the term “woke” because people have a hard time defining it. “Woke is an existential threat to our society,” DeSantis said. “To say it’s not a big deal, that just shows you don’t understand what a l...Fire at refugee shelter in eastern Germany kills 1, injures 10

The Associated PressWhat to know as Prince Harry prepares for court fight with British tabloid publisher

LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry is going where other British royals haven’t for over a century: to a courtroom witness stand. The Duke of Sussex is set to testify in the first of his five pending legal cases largely centered around battles with British tabloids. Opening statements are scheduled Monday in his case. Harry said in court documents that the royal family had assiduously avoided the courts to prevent testifying about matters that might be embarrassing. His frustration and anger at the press, however, impelled him to buck convention by suing newspaper owners — allegedly against the wishes of his father, now King Charles III. If Harry testifies as scheduled Tuesday in his lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mirror, he’ll be the first member of the royal family to do so since the late 19th century, when Queen Victoria’s eldest son, Prince Albert Edward, testified twice in court. The man who would go on to become King Edward VII testified in the divorce pro...Latest news
